Wildfire Mitigation and DER Integration
Mitigate Wildfire Risk and Integrate DERs With the Enhanced SEL-651R-2
New enhancements make the SEL-651R-2 Advanced Recloser Control a better choice than ever for advancing your wildfire mitigation efforts and integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) into your power systems.
SEL Arc Sense technology (AST) helps reduce the risk of wildfire ignition by improving the detection of high-impedance faults (HIFs). It’s available as an optional feature in the SEL-651R-2, and we’ve added enhancements that include:
- Lowering the minimum current threshold for AST algorithm tuning. This adjustment expands application of AST for lightly loaded feeders and in systems that have standardized on high-ratio CTs.
- Making the initial tuning method cumulative, so that it no longer resets due to loss of load.
- Expanding the range of the tuning duration and making it user-configurable. Tuned values are retained through power cycles and settings group changes.
In addition, new protection elements improve DER protection and integration.
- Inverse-time voltage elements can be combined with definite-time voltage elements to improve fault operation speed while maintaining coordination with electric power system relays.
- Voltage-based time-overcurrent elements provide backup protection and improve the dependability and operating times of the protection system.
